Q: What is a Diabetic alert dog?

 
A: Is a dog that can detect when your blood sugar is high or low or both (think drug sniffing dog).
 
Q: Do I need an alert dog?
 
A: These dogs are for people who have Hypoglycemia Unawareness. This is a condition where you have had to many lows so your body doesn't recoginze the symptoms.
 
Q: Is it expensive to get a dog?
 
A: The average cost is between $6000.00 and $25000.00 this is the cost just for the dog and the training. However if the dog saves your life once it's already more than paid for itself!!!
 
Q: What are the rules for service animals?
 
A: The rules depend on where you are and what you are doing.  Check the ADA website. More importantly know the rules and what to do if you have a problem.
 
Q: How long can an alert dog work for?
 
A: As a dog gets older they may not be as good at detecting the high or low.  There is no set age it's up to you as an owner to figure it out.
